UAE’s Economic Role Grows Through Bond Market Leadership, Says LSE Official

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates is solidifying its position as a leading economic force in the Middle East and North Africa, driven by its substantial participation in the bond issuance market in collaboration with the London Stock Exchange Group. According to Emirates News Agency, Charlie Walker, Deputy CEO of the London Stock Exchange, highlighted the UAE's role in shaping regional economic growth by utilizing advanced infrastructure and strategic partnerships. He noted that the UAE contributes significantly to global economic transformation, accounting for about 39 percent of the total bond issuances in the region. Since the beginning of the year, the UAE has completed 37 bond issues valued at $18.51 billion, marking its leadership in the issuance of debt instruments in the Middle East and Africa. Walker attributed this success to robust government policies and strategic alliances with global entities like the LSEG, which provides UAE companies and government entities with access to international ca pital markets. He emphasized the importance of the partnership between LSEG and Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange in strengthening the UAE's financial infrastructure and offering a reliable benchmark for investors through the FTSE ADX index series. The introduction of the FTSE ADX ESG Index underscores the UAE's dedication to responsible investment practices, enabling investors to align their portfolios with global environmental and social governance goals. Walker expressed that the collaboration between LSEG and ADX aims to establish a competitive financial market to support the UAE's economic ambitions and its goal to become a global hub for sustainable investment. Walker also noted the significance of the LSE as a platform for Emirati companies in financing major projects in renewable energy, infrastructure, and technology. In 2023, Masdar's $1 billion raised through green bonds exemplified the UAE's commitment to renewable energy and sustainability targets. He further pointed out the rising demand for susta inable financial instruments, such as Sukuk and green bonds, with Sukuk issuances in the Middle East reaching approximately $80 billion.
