NEW YORK: Jordan has underscored its commitment to enhancing women's roles in various sectors during the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network meeting held in New York. Key highlights include the country's progress in implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325, which emphasizes the importance of women's participation in peace and security efforts. According to Jordan News Agency, Jordan has made significant strides in empowering women, supported by a determined political will. The nation has developed an initial national plan to implement UNSCR 1325, which has facilitated increased women's participation in the security and military sectors, as well as in United Nations peacekeeping missions. This progress is attributed to the integration strategies adopted by the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) and the Public Security Directorate (PSD). The meeting also highlighted Jordan's second national plan, approved by the Council of Ministers in 2023, to further activate Resolution 1325. Developed in cooperation with UN Women, this plan is being monitored by various stakeholders, including the Ministerial Committee for Women's Empowerment. It encompasses four main objectives with diverse outputs and initiatives implemented by multiple ministries, public institutions, and civil society organizations. The objectives of the second national plan are multifaceted. The first aims to increase women's active participation in the security, military, diplomatic, and justice sectors. The second objective seeks to enhance women's involvement in decision-making related to crisis prevention, climate change, natural disasters, and epidemics. The third focuses on providing women and girls with access to essential services, such as shelter, medical care, psychological support, and legal protection. The final objective targets reducing violence against women, discrimination, and violent extremism.
