ABU DHABI: The cumulative financial facilities provided by banks in the United Arab Emirates to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) amounted to AED81.2 billion by the conclusion of the first half of 2024. These figures underscore the significant role SMEs play in the UAE's economic landscape, as revealed in recent statistics published by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). According to Emirates News Agency, the loans to SMEs constituted 9.5 percent of the total financial facilities extended to the commercial and industrial sectors in the UAE, which collectively reached AED855.7 billion by the end of June. This allocation highlights the substantial impact of SMEs on the broader economic framework. The SME sector comprises over 95 percent of all companies operating within the UAE, illustrating its dominance in the business ecosystem. Furthermore, it employs approximately 86 percent of the workforce within the private sector, reinforcing its critical contribution to employment and economic stability in the region.
