Death Toll from Indonesia School Collapse Rises to 37


Jakarta: The death toll from an Indonesian school collapse rose to 37 as officials continued to recover victims from the rubble.



According to Emirates News Agency, part of the multi-storey building on Indonesia’s Java island suddenly collapsed on September 29 while students were gathered for afternoon prayers.



‘As of Sunday morning, the number of recovered victims was 141 people – 104 were in safe condition, 37 were dead,’ national search and rescue agency operations director Yudhi Bramantyo stated.



He noted that 26 individuals were still unaccounted for.



The recovery operation was approximately ‘60%’ complete, as reported by national disaster agency official Budi Irawan. He expressed hopes that by the following day, the area would be cleared to determine the full extent of the tragedy.
