Abu dhabi: Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced the award of the Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) project, in Abu Dhabi. The project, which involves a 2.6-gigawatt Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant, has been awarded to Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA), alongside an international consortium comprising Aljomaih Energy and Water Company and Sembcorp Industries.
According to Emirates News Agency, EWEC signed the project's Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the partners, which will extend through to 2050. Under the PPA, EWEC will be the sole procurer of electricity, purchasing the net electrical energy generated by the plant. TAQA, as the local and majority shareholder, will hold a 60 percent stake in the project, while the international consortium will own 40 percent. Additionally, TAQA will own a 40 percent stake in the operations and maintenance company, with the consortium holding the remaining 60 percent.
Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Assets Officer of EWEC, emphasized the project's significance in advancing the UAE's energy sector. He highlighted that Taweelah C represents a pivotal milestone in EWEC's strategic roadmap, enabling the acceleration of renewable energy capacity and supporting the UAE's economic growth.
Dr. Frank Possmeier, Chief Investment Officer of TAQA Generation, noted that Taweelah C would significantly contribute to TAQA's low-carbon power and water portfolio. The project aligns with TAQA's growth strategy to achieve 150GW of power capacity internationally by 2030, with a focus on flexible and baseload gas-powered generation.
Adnan Abdulhadi Buhuligah, Chief Executive Officer of Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, remarked on the project's role in expanding the company's regional presence and commitment to delivering efficient energy solutions. Koh Chiap Khiong, President and CEO of Gas and Related Services at Sembcorp Industries, underscored the project's importance in supporting the UAE's energy transition through strategic partnerships and disciplined project execution.
The new plant, designed in collaboration with EWEC and the consortium, will feature state-of-the-art technology and high-efficiency turbines from Siemens Energy. The Taweelah C project aims to enhance the UAE's commitment to energy transition by integrating 2.6GW of power into the Abu Dhabi grid, supporting the inclusion of renewables. Furthermore, the project is expected to contribute to Emiratisation targets, fostering the inclusion of UAE Nationals in key roles and supporting workforce development goals. The plant is projected to commence commercial operations in 2029.
