Abu Dhabi:H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), chaired the agency's third board meeting of 2026. During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan reviewed the agency's key performance indicators, achievements, and plans to conserve natural resources and biodiversity and enhance environmental quality across Abu Dhabi.
According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikh Hamdan emphasized that environmental protection is a shared responsibility involving government entities, institutions, and the community. He highlighted the need for a proactive environmental system based on legislation, scientific data, and partnerships, aligning with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's vision to preserve the nation's natural heritage.
The meeting took place at Al Nakheel Palace and was attended by notable figures, including Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Mansour Ibrahim Al Mansouri, and others. Discussions covered the roadmap of environmental policies and strategies for 2026-2028, including groundwater, air quality, species protection, greenhouse gases, and climate change strategies. Sheikh Hamdan approved the legislation roadmap for 2027-2028 and urged for its swift execution.
EAD presented its performance from January to August 2026, revealing air quality compliance at 91.2 percent, surpassing the federal target. The Sustainable Fisheries Index and microbial water quality indicator held optimal scores, while the Marine Water Eutrophication Index exceeded its target. Furthermore, the environmental compliance rate was 94 percent, following numerous enforcement actions. EAD's efforts included securing a groundwater reserve and licensing strategic projects to balance development with environmental protection.
The agency also reported on initiatives like the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Observatory and progress on the Coral Gardens initiative. Sheikh Hamdan praised these efforts, noting their reflection of Abu Dhabi's biodiversity and the expertise of national talent.
EAD proposed the Abu Dhabi Desert Vegetation Cover Restoration Initiative, aiming to rehabilitate desert sites with native plants. Sheikh Hamdan directed a pilot phase to evaluate its success before expansion. The meeting concluded with updates on the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, celebrating EAD's 30-year milestone. Sheikh Hamdan urged continued investment in talent, technology, and partnerships to meet future environmental challenges.
