UAE Joins Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research

Oslo:The United Arab Emirates has become the first Arab state to join the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) as an associate member. This milestone was achieved during the SCAR Delegates Meetings in August 2026, following the 12th SCAR Open Science Conference held in Oslo, Norway.

According to Emirates News Agency, SCAR plays a crucial role in coordinating international scientific research in Antarctica and offers independent scientific advice for Antarctic governance and global climate assessments. The UAE's membership will connect its growing polar research community with an international network of scientists and institutions, enhancing understanding of Antarctica's impact on the global climate system.

The UAE's participation will be facilitated through the Emirates Polar Programme and the Polar Research Centre at Khalifa University. The UAE's researchers are developing expertise and collaborating with established polar programs for environmental monitoring and field research in Antarctica.

Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court and Chair of the Emirates Polar Programme Steering Committee, emphasized the significance of this membership for the UAE's polar science development. She highlighted that international cooperation and shared knowledge are essential for scientific progress in the polar regions and that SCAR will enable Emirati scientists to contribute to global research and form long-term partnerships.

As an Associate Member, UAE researchers can engage in SCAR's various international research and expert groups. These groups focus on disciplines such as ice-sheet dynamics, Southern Ocean change, permafrost, and geological history. This membership also provides opportunities for early-career Emirati scientists to access fellowships, research placements, and international scientific exchanges.

SCAR President Gary Wilson expressed pleasure at welcoming the UAE as an associate member, recognizing the Emirates Polar Programme's strong Antarctic research initiatives. He anticipates collaborative efforts with Emirates researchers to tackle significant global challenges.

Dr. Aisha AlSuwaidi, Professor of Earth Science at Khalifa University, expressed gratitude for SCAR Members' support of the UAE's application. She emphasized the UAE's commitment to contributing to shared scientific priorities and building partnerships across nations, while also integrating artists and storytellers to broaden Antarctica's narrative reach.

The UAE's application for SCAR membership was prepared by the Emirates Polar Programme and submitted through the Advanced Technology Research Council, the UAE's representative body in the International Science Council.
