Arusha:The Federal National Council (FNC) Group in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), led by Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, attended coordination meetings involving the Gulf, Arab, Asian, and Islamic groups in Arusha, Tanzania.
According to Emirates News Agency, these meetings took place alongside the IPU's 153rd Assembly and the 218th session of its Governing Council. The sessions tackled key agenda items, vacancies for the Arab Group on IPU committees, and the election process for the IPU President.
During the Arab Group meeting, attendees listened to candidates for the IPU President role and evaluated the work of the Executive Committee. They also agreed on candidates for open positions on standing and subsidiary committees.
The Islamic Group's consultative session focused on an emergency proposal from Bahrain's parliamentary delegation. This proposal emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime security, as well as maintaining the flow of international trade through maritime routes and straits in line with international law.
Dr. Marwan Al Muhairi, a member of the FNC, highlighted the significance of the proposed item amid current challenges to maritime navigation. He called for unified parliamentary actions and collaboration to bolster global efforts for safeguarding navigation freedom, fortifying maritime security, and ensuring the smooth flow of international trade.
FNC member Ahmed Mir Hashim Khouri noted the rising importance of parliamentary diplomacy amidst complex regional crises and cross-border challenges, emphasizing its role in facilitating dialogue and bridging differences. He also pointed to the UAE's success in merging parliamentary and official diplomacy to support dialogue and peace, as well as the FNC's active involvement in the IPU and parliamentary friendship groups.
