Abu Dhabi Launches Comprehensive School Sports Championship

Abu Dhabi:The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), has initiated the Abu Dhabi Sports Championship for Schools. This event brings together over 350 schools to compete in 19 different sports disciplines.

According to Emirates News Agency, the championship will span the entire academic year, with events taking place across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. It aims to provide students with opportunities to engage in competitive sports, enhance their skills, and display their talents.

Mohamed Taj Eddine Ahmed Alqadi, Chairman of ADEK, emphasized that the championship seeks to integrate sports into school life, encouraging students to stay active and develop values such as discipline, integrity, and sportsmanship. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, noted the importance of sports in uniting communities and promoting active lifestyles.

The competition will be structured into two formats to suit different age groups. The Elite League targets U17 and U19 students, offering a season-long league in seven sports, including football, basketball, and swimming. Meanwhile, the Tournament Format, for students from U9 to U19, will feature inter-school competitions throughout the year in sports such as rugby, archery, and judo.

Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary-General of ADSC, stated that the initiative will expand participation in school sports and facilitate the identification and development of talented athletes. The championship also includes Unified Leagues in partnership with Special Olympics UAE, ensuring inclusive participation for Students of Determination.

Additionally, a new rewards and recognition programme will honor schools, athletes, teachers, and coaches. This includes talent scholarships, funding for sports infrastructure, and professional development for educators. An emirate-wide leaderboard will also be implemented, with awards for top schools based on Elite League performance.

ADEK's talent identification process could lead to high-achieving students being selected for the All-Star Programme, which offers professional coaching and international competition opportunities, paving the way for a career in professional sports.
