IMF Chief Urges Increased Funding for Vulnerable States

Bangkok:The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Kristalina Georgieva has urged member states to fulfill their funding commitments to the IMF's Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust. This trust provides low- and zero-interest loans to low-income countries.

According to Emirates News Agency, Georgieva emphasized the IMF's responsibility to finance countries in need, highlighting the importance of increased funding. She spoke during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok.

Georgieva expressed concerns that current economic developments and the rapid pace of AI advancement could widen the gap between advanced and developing economies, particularly as development assistance sharply declines. She also called on members to replenish the Catastrophe and Relief Trust, a specialized fund offering grants for debt-service relief and cancellation to the poorest and most vulnerable member countries.
