Brussels:In 2025, the European Union (EU) experienced significant changes in its trade of green energy products, with notable increases in wind turbine imports and declines in solar panel purchases. The EU imported £11.4 billion worth of green energy products, including solar panels, biofuels, and wind turbines, while exporting £4.6 billion, as reported by Eurostat.
According to Wam, the value of solar panels imported to the EU fell by 27.7% to £8.0 billion, with a 4.0% decrease in volume, indicating a drop in average prices. In contrast, wind turbine imports surged by 40.6% in value to £0.7 billion, with a remarkable 69.0% rise in volume. Biofuel imports also decreased, valued at £2.7 billion, down 7.9% from the previous year, with an 11.6% decline in volume.
In terms of exports, the EU exported £0.5 billion worth of solar panels in 2025, with a 23.6% decrease in value but a 2.6% increase in volume. Biofuel exports were valued at £1.0 billion, experiencing a 45.9% drop in value and a 46.2% decrease in volume. Among the green energy products, wind turbines had the highest export value at £3.1 billion, showing a 10.8% increase in value and a 9.5% rise in volume compared to the previous year.
China was the predominant supplier of solar panels, accounting for 98.6% of all imports. For liquid biofuels, Malaysia led with a 21.9% share, followed by the United States, Argentina, and the United Kingdom. Notably, China's share in EU biofuel imports plummeted from 24.2% in 2024 to 1.3% in 2025. In wind turbines, imports were primarily from China, which increased its share from 41.3% to 59.6%, overtaking India as the top supplier.
