Qatar Emphasizes Technological Innovation for Maritime Security at UN Debate

New York:Qatar has advocated for the increased use of technological innovation to bolster maritime security and international peace, while firmly opposing any political pressure tactics involving the Strait of Hormuz. The nation demands its immediate and unconditional reopening to ensure the freedom of navigation.

According to Wam, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, delivered this message during a high-level UN Security Council open debate on "Emerging Technologies and Maritime Security Implications for Peace and Security" held in New York.

During the debate, Sheikha Alya emphasized the potential of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to enhance maritime safety. However, she also highlighted the risk of these technologies being misused, which could pose serious threats to commercial shipping and infrastructure.

She outlined four priorities for the responsible deployment of these technologies adherence to international law, effective human oversight, robust cybersecurity, and ensuring that developing countries benefit from technological advances.

Addressing maritime threats in the Middle East, Sheikha Alya called for compliance with UN resolutions and urged the Security Council to adopt a consistent, non-selective approach. She reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to the International Maritime Organization, emphasizing the importance of safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters, while continuing to support international efforts to assist affected ships and seafarers at sea.
