VIENNA: Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen has appointed Karl Nehammer, leader of the conservative People's Party and current caretaker Chancellor, to form a new coalition government. This development follows the Freedom Party's unsuccessful attempt to secure a coalition partner, despite winning the largest share of votes in the recent parliamentary elections. According to Emirates News Agency, the Freedom Party made history by winning Austria's legislative elections for the first time, achieving 28.8 percent of the vote. Despite this victory, the party was unable to form a government, prompting President Van der Bellen to task Nehammer with the responsibility of building a coalition. The People's Party, which came in second with 26.3 percent of the vote, now faces the challenge of establishing a new government framework. The Social Democrats, traditionally a major political force in Austria, fell to third place with 21.1 percent of the vote, marking a significant shift in the country's political la ndscape.
