Washington: The General Consumer Price Index (inflation) rose by 1.65 percent from January through to the end of September 2024, reaching 110.57 points, a report from the Department of Statistics revealed on Monday. This marks an increase from the 108.78 points recorded during the same period in the previous year. According to Jordan News Agency, the most significant factors contributing to the increase in the consumer price index over the nine-month period include a 10.52 percent jump in the personal luggage group, a 7.34 percent rise in water and sanitation services, a 5.86 percent increase in contributions to unions, a 3.89 percent growth in rents, and a 3.76 percent rise in the prices of vegetables, dried and canned legumes. In a closer look at the data for September 2024 alone, the general consumer price index surged to 110.81 points from 109.70 points in September of the previous year, reflecting a 1.01 percent increase within the month. Items like personal effects and water and sanitation services sa w significant price increases of 17.07 percent and 7.34 percent respectively. Additionally, tobacco and cigarettes prices rose by 6.70 percent, and culture and entertainment expenses grew by 4.99 percent. Nonetheless, there were notable declines in other categories such as clothing (down 4.59 percent), fruits and nuts (down 3.18 percent), and furniture, carpets, and bedding (down 2.94 percent). The report also highlighted a modest decline in the consumer price index from August 2024, where it stood at 111.17 points, to 110.81 points in September 2024. The downward movement was led by significant price reductions in vegetables, dried and canned legumes (down 5.10 percent), meat and poultry (down 4.03 percent), clothing (down 3.10 percent), and transportation (down 0.98 percent).
