Geneva: Reflecting this year's theme, "Cooperatives for a Peaceful World," the International Labour Organisation (ILO) underscored how cooperative enterprises create jobs, strengthen local economies, and foster democratic participation in times of growing global uncertainty. In his message marking the International Day of Cooperatives 2026, ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo highlighted the vital role of cooperatives in advancing peace through decent work, social justice, and resilient communities.
According to Emirates News Agency, Houngbo emphasized that peace transcends the mere absence of war and is deeply rooted in social justice, an essential component of the ILO's mandate. He noted that current global challenges, such as conflict, displacement, inequality, economic insecurity, environmental disruption, and declining trust, place a strain on peace.
In this context, cooperatives play a crucial role. They are instrumental in creating jobs and livelihoods, bolstering local economies, and ensuring access to essential goods and services. By keeping value within local communities, cooperatives empower individuals with a voice, shared responsibility, and democratic control.
Houngbo pointed out that over one billion people are members of cooperatives worldwide, with cooperative employment accounting for one in ten workers globally. The 300 largest cooperatives and mutuals collectively generate a turnover of nearly US$2.8 trillion.
He also highlighted the ILO's Promotion of Cooperatives Recommendation, which advocates for a policy and legal framework supportive of cooperatives' unique nature, guided by cooperative values and principles. Cooperatives contribute to stability, job creation, and community resilience, especially in times of crisis.
As the world celebrates the International Day of Cooperatives on July 4, 2026, under the theme "Cooperatives for a Peaceful World," Houngbo urged people to acknowledge the role of cooperatives in uniting communities for a more peaceful world anchored in decent work and social justice.
