European Union Retains Top Credit Rating with Stable Outlook

Brussels:The European Union and associated borrowing entities, including the European Atomic Energy Community and the European Coal and Steel Community, have maintained their top Aaa long-term credit ratings, with a stable outlook. This achievement is supported by the continued strong financial and political backing from member states.

According to Emirates News Agency , Moody's Ratings highlighted that the assessment reflects the EU's unique financial structure and its legal authority to request funding from member states. The Union's weighted average shareholder rating stands at a1, with Germany contributing nearly 22 percent to the central budget.

The EU remains an active participant in capital markets, with annual issuance ranging between £150 billion and £180 billion. Moody's emphasized that the EU continues to manage its expanding loan and financial assistance portfolio prudently, particularly regarding Ukraine-related exposure, maintaining provisioning rates of around 70 percent to mitigate risks.

The agency stated that the stable outlook is based on the expectation that member states will continue to support the EU. It also warned that future pressure on the rating could occur if there is a significant deterioration in the creditworthiness of major contributors or an unexpected weakening of the Union's joint support mechanism.
