FIA Agrees on Regulatory Refinements for 2026 Formula One Season

Budva: FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has announced a series of regulatory refinements for the 2026 Formula One season following a collaborative agreement among key stakeholders. The agreement was reached during an online meeting that included representatives from the FIA, Team Principals, CEOs of Power Unit Manufacturers, and FOM. These refinements are set to address qualifying energy management, race safety, power controls, race start-line safety systems, and wet-weather visibility and grip improvements.

According to Emirates News Agency, the final proposals for these changes will now proceed to an FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) e-vote, aiming for implementation before the Miami Grand Prix on May 3rd, with the exception of race start proposals, which will undergo testing and analysis during that weekend. FIA President Ben Sulayem expressed gratitude towards all involved parties for their swift and cooperative efforts. He highlighted the importance of drivers' input in the discussions, emphasizing the goal of maintaining safety and sporting fairness as top priorities.

The discussions leading to these refinements were informed by data from the initial events of the 2026 season. Agreed changes include increasing the number of events with alternative lower energy limits from 8 to 12, allowing teams to better adapt to circuit characteristics. Additional measures aim to reduce excessive closing speeds while preserving overtaking opportunities and performance characteristics. Rear light systems have also been simplified, offering clearer visual cues to improve visibility and reaction time in poor conditions.

The FIA Region I Spring Meeting in Budva, Montenegro, which concludes on Thursday, has brought together representatives from 102 FIA Member Clubs across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. The meeting focused on promoting safe and sustainable mobility for motorsport fans and road users.
