Bugesera:Rwanda The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and Formula 1 have announced a groundbreaking 10-year agreement to host the FIA Formula One World Championship in Africa once again, with the Formula 1 African Grand Prix set to take place in Rwanda in the early 2030s.
According to Emirates News Agency, this marks the first time since 1993 that the sport will return to the African continent. The agreement concludes a long-standing ambition for Formula 1, following years of collaboration to establish a sustainable and world-class Grand Prix with the right partners.
The inaugural race is planned for a new circuit in Bugesera, Rwanda, which is expected to be completed early in the next decade. The purpose-built track will adhere to FIA Grade 1 standards and is part of a larger development project led by the Rwanda Development Board. This initiative includes sports, tourism, infrastructure, and commercial developments near the new Kigali International Airport.
The circuit will be designed to harmonize with the natural landscape, taking advantage of elevation changes to offer a unique and challenging racing experience. It aims to provide exceptional viewing opportunities for fans and serve as a year-round venue for international motorsport, conferences, and entertainment, contributing to economic growth in the region.
The announcement underscores Formula 1's commitment to expanding its global reach and connecting with new audiences. Africa presents significant growth potential for the sport, with over 100 million fans on the continent and a youthful fan base, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem highlighted the importance of this development for the sport's global expansion and the creation of a lasting legacy. He emphasized Rwanda's commitment to hosting a world-class event and the FIA's dedication to increasing accessibility and developing talent across Africa.
