Gaza: In remarks highlighting the perilous conditions for media personnel, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has stated that Gaza has witnessed the highest number of journalist and media worker fatalities in any conflict in decades. Between 2006 and 2024, over 1,700 journalists have been killed worldwide, with approximately 85 percent of these cases never reaching court, according to a report by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). According to Emirates News Agency, the dangers faced by journalists are emphasized annually on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, marked on November 2nd. This year's observance aligns with the release of the biannual UNESCO Director-General's Report on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity, which revealed a 38 percent increase in journalist killings compared to the previous report. In his 2024 message for the International Day, Guterres called on governments to act urgently to protect journalists, investigate crimes against them, and prosecute those responsible. The ongoing conflict in Gaza was a focal point at the 2024 UN International Media Seminar on Peace in the Middle East, an event aimed at fostering dialogue and understanding among media practitioners to support a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a statement read at the Seminar by UN head of global communications Melissa Fleming, Guterres noted that journalist fatalities in Gaza have reached unprecedented levels in modern conflicts. He further criticized the ongoing ban on international journalists entering Gaza, stating that it "suffocates the truth even further." Every two years, the UNESCO awareness campaign commemorating the International Day coincides with the findings of the Report on global and regional impunity. UNESCO warns that impunity conceals serious human rights abuses, corruption, and crime, and it urges governments, civil society, the media, and others committed to upholding the rule of law to engage in global efforts to end this impunity.
