Monaco: Great Britain's Matt Brennan made a significant mark in the world of professional cycling by clinching victory in the second stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday. The 21-year-old cyclist, competing in his first Grand Tour, showcased his sprinting prowess in the final kilometers of the 214km race from Monaco to Manosque, seizing his inaugural stage win.

According to BBC, the race dynamics appeared to favor Brennan's teammate Wout van Aert and Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar as the primary contenders for the stage win. However, as the race approached its final stretch, Van Aert was reeled in, and Pogacar chose to conserve his energy, paving the way for Brennan's remarkable sprint to the finish line.

Brennan, who joined the Team Visma-Lease a Bike's World Tour squad in 2025, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "We started off with the ambition of Wout trying to get in the red jersey today. We had that plan and then I was always going to be in the background for the sprint in case that plan [didn't work] ... and that's exactly what happened. Hopefully, it's not the last one, but it's nice."

The stage concluded with Spaniard Pau Miquel Delgado of Bahrain Victorious taking second place, while Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates secured third. Pogacar maintained his position at the top of the general classification after winning Saturday's opening time trial by a mere 0.09 seconds, carrying a nine-second lead over second-place Van Aert into the third stage on Monday.

Brennan's victory catapulted him to third place in the overall standings, trailing Pogacar by just 10 seconds. Despite a promising start, Britain's Ethan Hayter fell behind and finished 31 seconds off the lead, placing him 13th in the general classification. In a poignant moment, Josh Tarling, who recently lost his brother in a crash, finished 125th.

The race will continue on Monday, taking the riders into the French Pyrenees, culminating in a challenging mountain finish at Font Romeu near the Spanish border.
