Dubai: The Annual Meeting of the Global Future Councils 2024 (AMGFC24) emphasized the critical role of agile regulation in harnessing the benefits of emerging technologies as humanity enters the "Age of Intelligence," according to Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of Dubai Future Foundation. The event, hosted by the UAE Government in cooperation with the World Economic Forum, convened over 700 participants from 80 countries to discuss the future of global technology and governance. According to Emirates News Agency, Belhoul highlighted Dubai's position as a pioneering city for testing and implementing new technologies. He stressed the importance of creating adaptive regulatory environments that can keep pace with technological advancements. "Regulations will never be on par with the most recent innovations. The key is how agile you can make your regulatory frameworks, how you create a system that can adapt quickly," Belhoul explained. He further described how Dubai enables innovation through collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and academic researchers, fostering a robust ecosystem for technological growth. The conference also featured insights from other global leaders who explored the intersection of technology with various sectors. Erik Brynjolfsson, Director of the Digital Economy Lab at Stanford University, discussed the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in industries such as education and agriculture. Samir Saran, President of the Observer Research Foundation, provided a geopolitical perspective on the role of middle powers like the UAE in leading global initiatives on climate action and tech governance. Emma FitzGerald, an independent non-executive director at Seplat Energy, emphasized AI's role in enhancing energy efficiency and decision-making in resource management. Meanwhile, Megan Palmer, Director of iGEM, underscored the revolutionary impact of synthetic biology, integrated with AI, in potentially reshaping 30% of global economic sectors. The meeting not only add ressed the opportunities presented by technological convergence, including high-speed computing, AI, and robotics, but also the challenges such as the equitable distribution of AI benefits and the prevention of technology-induced fragmentation. AMGFC24 serves as a precursor to the 2025 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, setting the agenda for global discussions on technology and governance.
