Abu Dhabi: Japan's military has successfully test-fired a missile on its own territory for the first time, marking a significant step in the nation's ongoing military expansion efforts. This historic test involved the Type 88 surface-to-ship, short-range missile and took place at the Shizunai Anti-Air Firing Range, located on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Ground Self-Defence Force's 1st Artillery Brigade executed the test using a training missile that targeted an uncrewed boat positioned approximately 40 kilometers (24 miles) off Hokkaido's southern coast. This move signifies a notable shift in Japan's defense strategy, as previous missile tests were conducted overseas in the United States and Australia due to space limitations and safety concerns at home.
