AMMAN: The Ministry of Agriculture has initiated agreements with five local tomato concentrate factories to manage the surplus production of tomatoes, with efforts already underway as of Tuesday. According to Jordan News Agency, the Ministry has successfully coordinated with two of these factories to finalize agreements with local farmers. This initiative aims to absorb a significant portion of the surplus tomato production. It is part of a broader government effort to support tomato farmers financially and stabilize the market. Each participating farmer will receive JD50 for every tonne of tomatoes exported or prepared for manufacturing, with the government dedicating a total of JD1 million from the Agricultural Risk Fund to support 20,000 tonnes. The ministry also reported that some tomato shipments have already been exported to Egypt and other non-traditional markets. This step is intended to enhance the sustainability of tomato exports. Continuous efforts are being made to coordinate with exporters to m aximize the benefits from government support and increase the quantities exported. Furthermore, the ministry noted that the delivery of tomatoes to Jordan's central markets has been adjusted to meet local demand more effectively. This regulated supply is expected to help stabilize market prices, despite a current decrease in demand at vegetable and fruit markets. The ongoing adjustments and support are part of the government's strategy to ensure a balanced approach to both local consumption and international exportation.
