MoHAP Unveils Climate Health Adaptation Plan for 2026-2031

Abu Dhabi:The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has announced the launch of its Health Sector Climate Adaptation Plan for 2026-2031. This national initiative aims to safeguard public health against the escalating impacts of climate change and ensure the availability of health services during climate-induced pressures.

According to Wam, the plan was unveiled at the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit, attended by prominent figures including Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of Health and Prevention, and Dr. Alanoud Abdullah Alhaj, Assistant Undersecretary for the Green Development and Climate Change Sector at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, among other officials.

Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, health authorities, and specialized partners, the plan is part of broader national efforts to integrate health and environmental policies. It aligns with the UAE National Climate Change Adaptation Plan and is guided by the directives of the UAE's leadership, emphasizing the protection of citizens' health amidst changing climate conditions.

The plan focuses on six key areas heat-related illnesses, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, vector-borne diseases, water- and food-borne diseases, and mental health. It aims to develop early warning systems and ensure healthcare facilities are prepared for climate-related health impacts.

Minister Al Sayegh emphasized the UAE's responsibility to anticipate climate risks and protect communities before illness occurs. He highlighted the plan's role in aligning health, environmental, and research efforts to transform scientific knowledge into preventive actions.

The initiative prioritizes protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring health institutions can address evolving health needs. Practical measures include developing surveillance systems for climate-sensitive diseases, improving healthcare professionals' skills, and enhancing emergency preparedness.

The plan is a key component of the UAE's 'We the UAE 2031' vision and demonstrates the country's commitment to a resilient health system that mitigates the health impacts of climate change.
