Abu Dhabi:The UAE's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has confirmed ongoing efforts in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), and other relevant authorities to secure the GEM NO. 2 oil tanker after a spill in the country's territorial waters.
According to Wam, specialized technical teams are currently addressing technical issues with the tanker, including repairing damaged sections and restoring operational systems. Field assessments indicate that no new oil leakage has been detected, with continuous maritime and aerial monitoring supported by satellite imagery to track any developments.
Efforts by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to address marine pollution are ongoing, with operations focused on surveying, monitoring, and cleaning affected coastal areas. Latest satellite images as of October 30, 2026, show the oil slick concentrated off the coast of Umm Al Qaiwain and extending towards Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Sharjah. The concentration of pollution has significantly declined, and containment efforts are primarily utilizing mechanical recovery and chemical dispersants, in line with international standards.
As a precaution, some beaches and coastal areas have been temporarily closed to protect public safety and facilitate remediation operations. The Ministry assures that local fish and food products remain safe for consumption, emphasizing the reliability of the UAE's food security system.
Etihad Water and Electricity has highlighted proactive measures to ensure the safety and quality of drinking water, including monitoring seawater quality and testing distributed water. These precautions are not expected to disrupt water supplies to consumers.
The Ministries and NCEMA commend the coordinated efforts that have secured the tanker and contained the oil leak, pledging continued operations to ensure maritime safety and environmental protection. The public will be kept informed through official channels as the situation develops.
