Pellizzari Triumphs in Vuelta Stage 17 Despite Protest Concerns

Madrid: Italy's Giulio Pellizzari claimed victory in stage 17 of the Vuelta a España, with Britain's Tom Pidcock finishing second, amid growing concerns among riders about ongoing pro-Palestine protests. Pellizzari, aged 21, made a decisive move 3.5 km from the end of the 143.2 km route, conquering the challenging slopes at the summit finish on the Alto de El Morredero.

According to BBC, the race saw Pidcock cross the line shortly after Pellizzari, emerging from a small group of general classification contenders that had broken away during the climb. Pellizzari's teammate, Jai Hindley, secured third place. Ahead of Wednesday's stage, riders collectively decided to neutralize the stage in case of disruptions, opting not to race to an undefined finish, a method previously used on stages affected by protests during this year's Grand Tour.

In response to the ongoing situation, Vuelta organizers announced adjustments to Thursday's stage 18, reducing the individual time trial in Valladolid from 27.2 km to a 12.2 km route, while maintaining the original start and finish points to ensure "greater protection" for the event.

Pascal Chanteur, vice-president of the riders' union, told Reuters that the participants might withdraw from the race altogether over safety concerns if further incidents occur. "The riders voted by a majority to stop in case of a new problem. They will then decide whether to continue or to end the event," Chanteur stated.

Jack Haig from Bahrain Victorious expressed the riders' predicament, saying, "Unfortunately we're being caught in the middle of something that maybe doesn't even really involve us. At the moment we are kind of just the pawns in a very large chess game that unfortunately is affecting us."

The Vuelta a España is set to conclude in Madrid on Sunday.
