Qatar Intensifies Efforts to Combat Desertification and Drought Through Sustainable Initiatives

Abu dhabi: Desertification and drought present escalating environmental challenges on a global scale, driven by climate change and human activities. These issues threaten food security, biodiversity, and sustainable development efforts. Recognizing these challenges, Qatar has prioritized combating desertification and drought, considering its hot, arid desert climate and limited water resources.

According to Emirates News Agency, Qatar has adopted an integrated strategic approach aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030. This approach includes afforestation programs, cultivation of drought-resistant plants, modern irrigation technologies, and land rehabilitation. On the international front, Qatar actively participates in global environmental agreements and initiatives, including the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is central to implementing national policies for natural resource protection. It supports Qatar's initiative to plant 10 million trees by 2030, with over four million trees planted so far. The ministry has also launched the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2025-2030, aiming to establish a comprehensive framework to achieve land degradation neutrality and sustainable development.

Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Muslimani emphasized the importance of nature reserves in protecting biodiversity, with terrestrial reserves covering 27 percent of Qatar's area. The ministry plans to expand these protected areas and utilize advanced technologies for environmental monitoring.

Khalid Boujamhour Al Muhannadi highlighted Qatar's long-term strategy for sustainable land management, restoration of degraded areas, and enhancement of native vegetation cover. The ministry integrates environmental considerations into national planning and collaborates with volunteers, educational institutions, and the private sector.

Dr. Saif Ali Al Hajri noted Qatar's transformation of desert environments into green spaces through cooperation and advanced technologies. Initiatives like the One Million Trees and the regional 10 Million Trees initiative under the Middle East Green Initiative have significantly expanded green spaces.

These efforts align with Qatar National Vision 2030, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change's strategy, and the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2025-2030, providing a sustainable environment for future generations.
