Abu Dhabi:The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the research arm of Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council, is enhancing the UAE's space capabilities through significant contributions to the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt, slated for launch in 2028. The institute is focusing on advanced research, technology development, and the nurturing of Emirati engineering expertise.
According to Emirates News Agency, TII is building an integrated research environment that combines advanced space technologies, specialized facilities, and training for Emirati scientists and engineers. This initiative aims to bolster national capabilities and facilitate participation in global space missions.
A primary focus of TII's efforts is the development of electric propulsion technologies and a UAE-made space probe, created and tested in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the UAE Space Agency and other partners. This probe will be integrated with the MBR Explorer spacecraft and act as the mission's sole deployable payload. It will separate from the main spacecraft to perform close-range observations of asteroid 269 Justitia, helping scientists study its surface and composition to better understand the solar system's early formation.
The mission's electric propulsion system is crucial, providing thrust over a multi-year journey while enhancing fuel efficiency and trajectory planning. Emirati engineer Mariam Alhammadi received recognition for her research on this system, which included an award for her paper analyzing fuel consumption uncertainties.
Fatima Alnaqbi, from TII's Propulsion and Space Research Centre, also plays a significant role in the project. Her contributions include the development of the asteroid exploration probe, which will capture detailed images of the asteroid. Inspired by previous Emirati space achievements, Alnaqbi has pursued advanced studies in space technology.
Amna Alhosani, another key contributor, is advancing UAE space technologies through her work on hybrid rocket design. Her research underscores the importance of overcoming technical challenges with collaboration and innovation.
These initiatives by TII are not only developing Emirati talent but also supporting the UAE's ambitions to expand its influence in space exploration and contribute to international scientific endeavors.
