Beijing: Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the General Civil Aviation Authority, emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in civil aviation during the UAE's participation in the 4th China Air Transport Association Conference. Held in Beijing from 17th to 19th September 2026, the conference revolved around the theme 'Integration and Development of Artificial Intelligence and Civil Aviation', where Al Suwaidi delivered a key address.
According to Emirates News Agency, Saif Al Suwaidi highlighted the strong and long-standing partnership between the UAE and China, emphasizing mutual respect and trust. He noted that civil aviation serves as a crucial sector reflecting this partnership, supported by air services agreements facilitating over 90 weekly flights that connect cities in both countries.
During his address, Al Suwaidi explained that artificial intelligence is poised to transform the entire aviation ecosystem, affecting regulation, airspace management, aircraft maintenance, passenger services, and decision-making support. He stressed the need for clear governance and regulatory frameworks to ensure the safe and responsible use of these technologies.
Al Suwaidi underscored the importance of international cooperation to achieve alignment in the governance of artificial intelligence technologies. He noted that both the UAE and China are investing in digital transformation, advanced air mobility, and smart infrastructure, which creates opportunities for enhanced cooperation among various stakeholders including regulatory authorities, airlines, airports, and technology companies.
He further stated that the success of artificial intelligence adoption in aviation should be assessed by its impact on safety, efficiency, and sustainability. It should simplify complexities, identify risks early, and enhance operational efficiency, ultimately providing passengers with a safer travel experience.
On the sidelines of the conference, Al Suwaidi met with Pan Yixin, Secretary-General of the China Air Transport Association, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation and exploring future collaboration opportunities in civil aviation.
The conference featured a range of activities, including dialogue sessions, specialized forums, and a professional exhibition. It addressed topics such as digital and smart civil aviation, aviation services, air logistics, and professional aviation education, with over 100 exhibitors showcasing technologies covering various segments of the civil aviation industry value chain.
