Zurich: The United Arab Emirates has won the right to host the 2027 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II, Group A, following a vote at the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) Annual Congress in Zurich, Switzerland.
According to Emirates News Agency, the UAE's bid received 14 votes, surpassing Croatia's 11 votes. This decision reflects the growing international confidence in the UAE's capabilities in organizing major global sporting events and its advanced sports infrastructure. The UAE Winter Sports Federation delegation, led by Vice President Hamel Ahmed Al Qubaisi, participated in the congress meetings. The delegation included Jumaa Al Dhaheri, Secretary General, and Mohamad Aref Aljachi, Technical Director, who collectively presented the hosting bid, emphasizing the organisational, technical, and operational aspects of the championship.
The championship is scheduled to be hosted in Al Ain City in April 2027, with participation from several national teams competing in Division II (Group A). This event will mark a significant milestone as it will be the first of its kind in the region. Hamel Ahmed Al Qubaisi highlighted that the strong support from the UAE's leadership was instrumental in achieving this goal. He stated that securing the hosting rights demonstrates the progress of winter sports in the UAE and reflects the IIHF's trust in the country's organizational capabilities and adherence to international standards.
Al Qubaisi also mentioned that the UAE was previously awarded the right to host the 2026 edition, which was later canceled. This previous acknowledgment further affirms the UAE's reputable standing with the IIHF and confirms its extensive experience in organizing international sports events. He expressed the Federation's commitment to delivering an exceptional edition of the championship, showcasing the UAE's prominent role on the international sports stage.
