New York:The United Nations General Assembly offers a platform for nations to enhance cooperation on mutual priorities. The challenge for leaders gathering in New York is whether these collaborations can result in meaningful outcomes.
According to Emirates News Agency, the collaboration between Africa and the UAE is pivotal, with Africa's expanding markets, youthful population, and infrastructure ambitions providing significant global opportunities. The UAE aims to be a long-term ally in Africa's vision for the future, promoting shared economic growth and sustainable prosperity.
The UAE's engagement with Africa is exemplified by nine Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) with African nations and increasing trade and investment flows. This cooperation spans infrastructure, energy, logistics, innovation, and market access, emphasizing a complementary relationship where Africa's scale and talent meet the UAE's capital and connectivity.
Significant projects illustrate the UAE's commitment to Africa's development. For instance, in Senegal, investments have been made in port capacity and trade infrastructure, while in Togo, renewable energy access is being bolstered by the development of the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Solar Plant. Similar efforts are underway in the Central African Republic with the Saka solar project and in the Union of the Comoros with solar plants enhancing energy security.
The UAE's investment strategy focuses not only on financial returns but also on fostering sustainable opportunities such as efficient infrastructure, clean energy, and local industry growth. This practical approach is also evident in clean energy partnerships, with initiatives like Masdar's USD 10 billion clean energy program expected to expand electricity access significantly.
Further illustrating the depth of UAE-Africa ties, non-oil trade with Sub-Saharan Africa surpassed USD 126 billion in 2025, reflecting a 45% increase from the previous year. Additionally, over 30,000 African companies have established operations in the UAE, supported by an expanding network of CEPAs aimed at reducing trade barriers.
Development efforts align with this commercial expansion. From 2023 to 2024, the UAE provided over USD 1 billion in foreign aid to Africa. The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, launched in 2024, addresses water scarcity, and the upcoming UN Water Conference, co-hosted with Senegal in Abu Dhabi, will explore further collaboration opportunities.
The UAE's partnership with Africa is characterized by shared priorities and practical solutions to support sustainable growth, addressing challenges such as energy security, water access, and food stability. This cooperative approach ensures lasting prosperity for both regions.
