UN Urges Israel to Reverse Displacement and Settlement Policies in Occupied Palestinian Territory

Abu Dhabi:United Nations: The United Nations has raised concerns over Israeli policies in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, citing issues such as settlement expansion, violence, forcible transfer, land confiscation, and home demolitions, which are affecting the legal and demographic landscape and undermining Palestinian self-determination.

According to Emirates News Agency, a report by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the General Assembly reviewed actions taken by Israeli authorities from June 2025 to May 2026. The report highlights the approval of 53 new settlements and 102 new outposts in the West Bank, bringing the total to 375. Additionally, plans for around 24,580 housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem were advanced or approved.

During the reporting period, 5,715 Palestinians were displaced, with approximately 48,000 Palestinians forcibly displaced in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since October 7, 2023. The report also noted the demolition or seizure of 1,171 structures, displacing over 1,200 Palestinians.

The report documented ongoing settler violence, including physical attacks and destruction of property, and mentioned coordination between settlers and some Israeli security forces members. Guterres expressed concerns over these practices, suggesting they might lead to a de facto annexation of the territory, undermining its integrity and Palestinian self-determination.

The UN reiterated its demand for Israel to cease its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and comply with international law, halting all settlement activities and evacuating settlers. It urged the reversal of policies causing forcible transfer and called for protection for Palestinians and accountability for violence.

The report also recommended that UN Member States adhere to the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion from July 19, 2024, which advises against recognizing or supporting the situation resulting from Israel's actions in the occupied territory.
