SHARJAH: The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is preparing to host the 11th edition of the Sharjah International Library Conference (SILC), attracting library professionals and experts from around the world to discuss the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into library services. The event, in collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA), will take place from November 9-10 alongside the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair at Expo Centre Sharjah, providing both in-person and virtual participation options for a global audience. According to Emirates News Agency, SILC 2024 represents the only ALA-affiliated conference held outside the United States, establishing it as a premier platform for international library professionals. This year's conference will welcome over 400 experts from more than 30 countries, including a record 100 librarians from the UAE. The conference, themed 'Integrating AI into Library Services and Advancing AI Literacy', will focus on enhancing library efficiency and user experiences through AI technologies. The conference's agenda includes expert-led workshops, panels, and case studies on sustainable development and innovations in school libraries. Discussions will feature best practices from winners of the Emirates Literature Foundation's School Librarian of the Year Award. Sessions will delve into modern technologies and innovation integration, such as 'The Experimental Library: How to Take Risks, Fail Forward, and Create Change' and 'Reimagining Library Access and Support with Conversational AI', highlighting AI's potential in personalizing services and revolutionizing marketing strategies. Beyond technology, the conference will explore libraries' roles in education and community building. Sessions like 'The Playful Library: Building Environments for Learning and Creativity' and 'Building News Literacy' will address fostering creativity and teaching critical thinking. Additional topics include 'Academic Libraries and Community, Culture, and Collaboration' and 'Storylivin g: The Power of Cinematic Virtual Reality to Promote Empathy'. To help librarians stay current with industry developments, SILC offers skill enhancement and knowledge exchange sessions. 'Reimagining the Libraries and Librarians of the Future' will tackle future challenges and opportunities, while 'The High-Impact Digital Library: Innovative Approaches for Outreach and Instruction' and 'Everyday Evidence-Based Practice in Libraries: Case Studies and Reflections' offer practical tools for adapting to an evolving environment. SILC also provides networking opportunities through the Librarian's Lounge and Exhibitor Zone, where participants can exchange ideas and explore the latest library products and services.
