US stock market in negative territory Friday during mid-day trading

Major indexes in the US stock market were in negative territory on Friday during mid-day trading. The Dow Jones was down 187 points, or 0.58%, to 31,918 at 11.27 a.m. EDT. The S and P 500 also fell 26 points, or 0.67%, to 3,922. The tech-heavy Nasdaq decreased 101 points, or 0.86%, to 11,686. The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 6% to 23.98, while the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 1.4% to 3.356%. The dollar index rose 0.65% to 103.20, while the euro fell 0.77% to $1.0747 against the greenback. Precious metals were mixed with gold flat at $1,994 per ounce, and silver rising 0.8% to $23.31. Oil prices lost more than 2%, with global benchmark Brent crude steady at $74.26 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $68.42.
