BAKU: As global investment in climate action topped a trillion dollars last year, a United Nations official emphasized the need for international climate finance to expand significantly. This expansion is deemed crucial to ensure a transition that benefits a broader array of countries and companies while genuinely protecting all communities from climate impacts. According to Emirates News Agency, Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, stressed the importance of setting a new, ambitious target for international climate finance at the COP29 summit in Baku. Speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Brookings Institution's Global Economy and Development Programme, Stiell described COP29 as the "stand-and-deliver" conference. He underscored that climate finance is essential to safeguarding the global economy and the lives and livelihoods of billions from the devastating effects of climate change. Stiell highlighted the necessity of leveraging private finance and signaling to financial market s that investing in green initiatives is advantageous. He also called for mechanisms to track and ensure the fulfillment of financial commitments. The UN official urged the funding of new national climate plans to protect the achievements of COP28 and to realize the pledges made in the UAE Consensus. These include tripling renewable energy, doubling energy efficiency, enhancing adaptation, and transitioning away from fossil fuels. Stiell also emphasized the need for the Loss and Damage Fund to become fully operational, directing resources to those most in need. Stiell pointed out that the current global landscape is marked by profound divisions, both between and within nations. He warned against the inclination to adopt an isolationist stance, advocating instead for a focus on solutions that emphasize the benefits of bold climate action. These benefits, Stiell noted, include stronger economic growth, increased employment, improved health, and access to secure and affordable clean energy. He concluded by a sserting that the only viable path forward is one where all nations can survive and thrive through enhanced climate action.
