AMMAN: Jordan's approach to food security, which has persisted despite regional and environmental challenges, was a focal point at the Economic Conference on Food Security. The event was organized by the Jordanian-Iraqi Brotherhood Association under the theme "A Future Vision... Joint Efforts," and featured insights from the Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Hunaifat. According to Jordan News Agency, Minister Hunaifat underscored Jordan's resilience in the face of numerous challenges, including climate change, Israeli conflicts affecting Gaza and Lebanon, and the burden of hosting 3.7 million refugees. This includes 1.3 million Syrians and 2.4 million Palestinian refugees, which has compounded the pressure on the nation's food and water resources. Despite these hurdles, Jordan has achieved a food self-sufficiency rate of 61.24% as of 2021 under the leadership of King Abdullah II, who has spearheaded early measures to address these issues. Hunaifat called for enhanced regional and international collaboration t o expedite progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He highlighted the need for new partnerships to bolster food security and foster economic integration. Iraqi Minister of Agriculture Abbas Maliki echoed this sentiment, expressing Iraq's dedication to regional cooperation in addressing food security challenges. The conference also featured contributions from Shankul Qader, President of the Jordanian-Iraqi Brotherhood Association, and Nabil Assaf, FAO Representative. Both stressed the necessity for regulatory reforms and collective efforts to secure food resources for all populations.
