JEDDAH: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is set to host an international donors' conference aimed at supporting displaced persons and refugees in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin. The event, scheduled for October 26, 2024, will be held at the headquarters of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah. It is being organized in collaboration with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the conference is a result of the 49th session decision of the OIC's Council of Foreign Ministers. It is expected to feature an opening address by Saudi Arabia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, alongside the Secretary-General of the OIC, Hussein Ibrahim Taha. The event aims to highlight the humanitarian challenges in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin, by bringing together high-level participants, including Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Joyce Musaya, Raouf Mazou, Zubaida Abubakar Omar, and a representative from the European Union. The conference seeks to raise awareness of the ongoing displacement and asylum crisis affecting this region of Africa, as well as to mobilize financial resources for immediate and future humanitarian efforts. The focus will be on addressing the urgent needs of affected populations and preparing for potential future challenges.
