San salvador: El Salvador's parliament has approved a constitutional reform that removes the ban on presidential re-election and extends the presidential term from five to six years. The reform was passed on Thursday with the support of 57 lawmakers from President Nayib Bukele's ruling Nuevas Ideas party in a fast-tracked vote. Only three opposition members opposed the measure.
According to Emirates News Agency, a second vote is required in the next legislative session for the reform to be finalized, but approval is considered certain. The reform also eliminates presidential run-offs and changes the end date of the current presidential term to June 1, 2027, which is two years earlier than previously scheduled. This adjustment aims to synchronize the timing of presidential, parliamentary, and municipal elections.
