Abu dhabi: The TRENDS Fifth Conference on Sustainable Water Security concluded today in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant step forward in addressing global water challenges.
According to Emirates News Agency, the two-day event was organized by TRENDS Research and Advisory and brought together 33 officials, experts, and researchers from various nations. The conference was attended by key figures such as Sheikh Khalifa bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi, Ali Saeed Al Neyadi, and Chancellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, along with several senior officials, undersecretaries, and representatives from media and sponsoring companies.
Participants reached a consensus on several recommendations, forming a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable water security on both global and regional scales. Key proposals included the promotion of innovative financing through green bonds and public-private partnerships to enhance water infrastructure investments, particularly targeting vulnerable communities. The conference also emphasized the acceleration of technological innovations in areas such as desalination, treatment, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence to improve crisis prediction and develop applicable solutions.
The recommendations highlighted the need to redefine water as a comprehensive security element, incorporating it into peace, economic stability, food security, and climate adaptation agendas. Strengthening transboundary cooperation through adaptive frameworks and institutional platforms was also stressed, aiming to transform river tensions into integration and development opportunities.
The conference advocated for multilateral partnerships to convert research into practical policies, expanding access to international financing for innovative water projects, and raising community awareness of water's critical importance. The discussions underscored the 'Rule of Three', emphasizing water's vital role in survival and crisis management.
Panel discussions further explored the role of finance, technology, and international case studies in transforming water systems. The dialogues, led by experts like Robert C Brears, Vijay Bains, Ahmed Al Kalbani, and Benjamin Davies, examined financial tools and legislative reforms needed to attract investments in water infrastructure. Technological advancements, including AI applications and solar-powered desalination, were also showcased by leaders like Professor Saeed Al Hassan Al Khazraji and Alya Al Mazrouei.
The conference concluded with a strong affirmation that water security is a shared global responsibility and a crucial factor in regional peace and development. It emphasized that investment in water resources is synonymous with investing in future generations' security and prosperity.
