TRENDS Session Advocates for Enhanced Investment in Maritime Innovation

Washington: TRENDS Research and Advisory’s United States Office (TRENDS US) recently hosted its third strategic session titled ‘Unmanned Surface Vessels: The Future of Maritime Security’ in Washington, DC. The session featured a panel of former military leaders and experts in defense and maritime technology.

According to Emirates News Agency, participants emphasized that 21st-century maritime deterrence is evolving beyond the traditional focus on fleet size. Modern deterrence now relies on speed, numbers, and innovative deployment capabilities. Unmanned technologies are critical in securing maritime routes and addressing emerging threats.

The session, moderated by Bilal Y. Saab, Senior Managing Director of TRENDS America, concentrated on three primary themes. These included the influence of unmanned surface and underwater vehicles (USVs and AUVs) on maritime security in the Gulf region and internationally, the potential of these systems to enhance deterrence, and the strategic importance of international and regional cooperation in technology development and deployment.

Panelists highlighted the necessity of international collaboration and partnerships for the advancement and deployment of unmanned systems. These partnerships facilitate real-world testing, the integration of artificial intelligence into joint operations, and the establishment of trust between humans and machines within complex defense networks.

The session concluded with recommendations advocating for increased investment in maritime innovation, the expansion of international partnerships, and the adoption of more adaptable funding frameworks. These measures aim to accelerate the integration of emerging technologies into global maritime security systems.
