Brussels: EU countries produced 6.0 million tonnes of pasta worth £9.1 billion in 2024, with exports reaching 2.9 million tonnes and imports at 1.7 million tonnes.
According to Emirates News Agency, the value of pasta production in the EU rose by 3% compared to 2023, despite a 5% decrease in production volume. These figures were released by Eurostat to commemorate World Pasta Day on October 25.
Italy dominated EU pasta production, accounting for 69% of the total with 4.1 million tonnes. Spain and Germany followed, contributing 6% (367,000 tonnes) and 5% (290,000 tonnes) respectively. In terms of exports, Italy again led by exporting 2.2 million tonnes, representing 77% of the EU’s total pasta exports. Spain was the second-largest exporter with 131,000 tonnes, or 5% of the total.
The majority of pasta exports, 55%, were directed to other EU countries, while the remaining 45% were shipped outside the EU. The United Kingdom and the United States were the primary non-EU destinations, receiving 25% and 23% of the exports outside the EU, respectively.
For imports, Germany was the largest importer within the EU, bringing in 468,000 tonnes or 28% of the total imports, followed by France with 372,000 tonnes or 22%.
