Sharjah: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the Independence Square project, marking the completion of significant developments in the area, including the construction of the Independence Monument. The inauguration, which took place on Tuesday morning, aligns with the UAE's 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, commemorating the nation's independence on December 2, 1971.
According to Emirates News Agency, the Ruler of Sharjah unveiled a commemorative plaque at the 34-metre-high monument, which features a seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven emirates. This monument stands as a significant urban landmark, displaying historical information about the UAE's independence on its four sides. The plaques document pivotal moments, such as the Rulers' agreement to establish the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971, following British control since a treaty signed on January 8, 1820.
The Ruler toured Independence Square, observing the operation of two fountains and the landscaping work. He also reviewed the redevelopment of the buildings surrounding the square, where 24 buildings received architectural enhancements, and 95 commercial signboards were replaced to create a cohesive urban environment. Infrastructure improvements included road and pavement upgrades, enhancing traffic flow and safety.
Additionally, the Ruler inaugurated the restored Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque near the square, aligning with his initiative to preserve and restore mosques in Sharjah. The mosque's renovation included raising the height of its minarets and walls and upgrading its facilities.
The inauguration was attended by Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Sheikh Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, and other officials, highlighting the project's importance as part of broader urban development efforts in Sharjah.
