Abu Dhabi’s Museums Bring Communities Closer: DCT Abu Dhabi Chairman

Abu dhabi: Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has emphasized the crucial role of museums in the socio-economic progress of the nation, highlighting their integration into the social fabric of the emirate.

According to Emirates News Agency, Al Mubarak's remarks came as part of the observance of International Museum Day, celebrated annually on 18th May with the theme 'Museums Uniting a Divided World'. He noted that in Abu Dhabi, culture is intertwined with daily life, reflecting a blend of Emirati heritage and an openness to global influences. He described culture as a tool of soft power that enhances community belonging, fosters communication, and supports the development of a sustainable creative economy.

Al Mubarak asserted that museums in Abu Dhabi transcend the traditional roles of cultural institutions. They are inclusive spaces where diverse cultures, experiences, and perspectives merge through shared experiences that foster understanding and dialogue. This is particularly significant in a city that hosts more than 200 nationalities. He highlighted the creation of cultural platforms and sustained commitment to engagement as key to fostering a dynamic cultural ecosystem that supports a cohesive community.

In 2025, the number of visitors to Abu Dhabi's cultural sites reached 8.6 million, marking a 50 percent increase compared to 2024. This growth underscores the increasing importance of culture in daily life, enhancing public engagement with cultural experiences and spaces that promote learning, interaction, and a sense of belonging.

Al Mubarak further stated that investing in culture is synonymous with investing in people and future generations. It contributes to improving quality of life and building connected societies by creating spaces for dialogue across cultures and generations, allowing young people to explore their identities and boost their self-confidence.

He also pointed out that Abu Dhabi's cultural institutions are pivotal in cultivating a sustainable creative economy based on knowledge, innovation, and human development. The culture and creative industries sector generated over 48,200 jobs and supported more than 307,000 employment opportunities in 2024. Institutions like the Zayed National Museum and Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi are seen as embodiments of a cultural vision that strengthens national identity while welcoming all to partake in a shared cultural narrative.
