Asharqia Metro in final stages

Minister of Transport Jabara Al-Seraisry has disclosed that the Asharqia Metro is in its final stages and will be soon announced in detail.
He said as well that the Asharqia Metro has the follow-up and support of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. However, he did not give any dates for the metro’s inauguration.
Al-Seraisry said in his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Royal Commission’s projects here that railway projects will contribute in expanding the railway network in the Kingdom and increase local investments, which will attract foreign investments eventually.
Investors know that the province has a very well developed infrastructure and the elements of a successful investment.
He said: “The railway network is directly connected to ports’ network at the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf.”
The strategic railways’ expansion plan in the Kingdom includes expanding and developing 19 railways, with a total length of 9,900 km that will be implemented in three phases.
The first phase covers the period 2010 to 2025, which works on the length of 5,500 km and has an investment of about SR63 billion. This phase is classified as high priority.
The second phase covering the period 2026 to 2033 will be 3,000 km long and has an investment of about SR209 billion, which is classified as medium priority.
The third phase will start in 2034 through 2040 covering a length of 1,400 km of railways and has an investment of about SR93 billion in a secondary priority classification.
This strategic plan includes other projects that are under study such as: Taif-Khamis Mushayit-Abha railways 706 km long. This railway line will connect Taif to Abha and Khamis Mushayit. There are also 660 km long Jeddah-Jazan railway project and Yanbu-Jeddah 350 km railway.
