Abu dhabi: The Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi (DCD), in close collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), has launched ‘Degayeg’, a community initiative aimed at inspiring individuals to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.
According to Emirates News Agency, the initiative seeks to highlight the importance of physical activity in maintaining health and preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It encourages community members to integrate physical movement into their daily lives, whether at home, work, or school. By promoting short, consistent bouts of movement, Degayeg aims to make physical activity a natural and enjoyable element of everyday life, enhancing physical, mental, and social well-being.
The initiative will feature a series of community-based activities throughout the year in areas such as Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. These activities are designed for various ages, abilities, and interests, including short walks, stretching exercises, neighborhood group activities, family sports events, and youth programs. The events are inclusive and accessible, welcoming children, youth, the elderly, people of determination, and individuals of all fitness levels.
Mohamed Helal Al Balooshi, Executive Director of the Community Engagement and Empowerment Sector at DCD, emphasized the initiative’s role in improving the quality of life by fostering a more active and connected community. He noted that dedicating a few minutes daily to movement can significantly impact health and social engagement.
Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji, Executive Director, Healthy Living at the Department of Health, stated that Degayeg is key to fostering a culture of movement and healthier living. He stressed the importance of creating equitable access to fitness opportunities and conveyed the department’s commitment to supporting such endeavors.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week to promote health and mitigate risks associated with inactivity. This guideline is supported by evidence showing that moderate activity can improve cardiovascular health, mental well-being, and reduce chronic NCD risks.
According to findings from DCD’s third Abu Dhabi Sports and Physical Activity Survey, there has been a positive trend in physical activity levels across the emirate. The percentage of individuals meeting WHO’s recommendations increased from 36% in the first survey to 53% in the latest one. Similarly, the proportion of children and adolescents engaging in 60 minutes of daily activity rose to 12.5%. Degayeg aims to build on this progress by encouraging residents to integrate daily movement into their lifestyle.
Residents can register for weekend events and programs through DCD’s digital platforms DCDAbuDhabi, selecting activities tailored to their age, fitness level, and schedules. All Abu Dhabi residents are invited to participate, contributing to a healthier, more connected community.
