DUBAI: In a virtual meeting chaired by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) assessed the emirate's ongoing efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. The council reviewed a significant 29% reduction in carbon emissions, indicating progress towards Dubai's goal of a 30% reduction by 2030. According to Emirates News Agency, the meeting, which marked the 84th session of the council, included the participation of key figures such as Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the DSCE. The council focused on evaluating future carbon emissions, engaging relevant entities, and mapping out strategies to meet net-zero targets by 2050 in alignment with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai's Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler. The DSCE has linked emissions control to various initiatives implemented by entities like the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Municipality, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), ENOC Group, D ubai Petroleum, and the Road and Transport Authority (RTA). The meeting underscored the importance of establishing a robust regulatory framework to sustain the success of these initiatives. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer highlighted the role of projects in solar energy, water and electricity conservation, green mobility, and operational efficiency in factories in achieving the annual emission reductions. The council also approved a programme to engage the private sector in developing electric vehicle charging stations, aiming to enhance Dubai's charging infrastructure. Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary-General of the council, noted that carbon emissions data collection began in 2013. The data has been pivotal in comparing annual reduction targets and reviewing implementation phases with performance indicators to ensure consistent progress. The meeting also included the participation of Dawood Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality; Abdulla bin Kalban, Managing Director of EGA; Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of ENOC; Juan-Pablo Freile, General Manager of Dubai Petroleum; and Muna Al Osaimi, CEO of the Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector at the RTA.
