DXB Achieves Top Sustainability Milestone with Global Accreditation

Dubai: Dubai International Airport (DXB) has been awarded a Level 4 "Transformation" accreditation by the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This recognition places DXB among the top 5% of airports globally that participate in the programme, as of September 2024. According to Emirates News Agency, the "Transformation" certification is given to airports that have achieved absolute emissions reductions and have driven systemic changes alongside their stakeholders. This achievement aligns with the UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategy, highlighting Dubai Airports' commitment to minimizing environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency through decarbonization, resource conservation, and the adoption of advanced technologies. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, stated, "Achieving Level 4 'Transformation' accreditation underscores our firm commitment to embedding sustainability at the co re of everything we do at Dubai Airports. This recognition not only highlights our progress in reducing our own carbon footprint but also reflects the strength of our partnerships in driving broader, systemic change across the aviation ecosystem." Griffiths emphasized that sustainability is a long-term strategy for Dubai Airports, involving collaboration, innovation, and constant improvement. He noted that the responsibility extends beyond the airport's operations, aiming to lead by example and foster a culture where all stakeholders contribute to a sustainable future. Stefano Baronci, Director-General of ACI Asia-Pacific and Middle East, praised Dubai Airports for its achievements, stating, "By positioning itself as one of the leaders in efficient carbon management, Dubai Airports demonstrates a strong commitment to building a more sustainable future." DXB has implemented several key initiatives to advance sustainable aviation, including a collaboration with dnata and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) to transition dnata's non-electric airside fleet to a biodiesel blend, reducing carbon emissions by over 3,500 tonnes annually. Additional partnerships, such as with Etihad Energy Services and BEEAH Group, have enhanced energy efficiency and reduced landfill waste. The airport has also adopted the 'Follow the Greens' system to optimize aircraft taxiing, cutting fuel consumption and emissions. Engagement with initiatives like 'Airports of Tomorrow' by the World Economic Forum and ACI further showcases DXB's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The launch of the oneDXB Sustainability Alliance, a network of airport partners, aims to explore over 180 potential decarbonization projects, reinforcing DXB's leadership in sustainability within the global airport community.
