ABIDJAN: Salah’s 97th-minute penalty rescued Egypt from a heart-stopping defeat against plucky Mozambique, who had stunned the Pharaohs after Mostafa Mohamed’s early opener with a two-goal blitz in four minutes in their first AFCON Group B game on Sunday evening at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Ivory Coast.

Egypt seemed invincible in the first half, controlling the game and nearly doubling their lead through Trezeguet’s near-miss. But the tide turned dramatically in the second half with two breathtaking goals.

The Pharoes, stunned and humbled, now face Ghana on Thursday, while Mozambique look to build on their momentum against Cape Verde.
