With the participation of the President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, the Group of 77+China Summit was launched today in the Cuban capital, Havana, under the slogan ‘Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation.’ The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and a number of leaders and heads of state of the group are participating in the summit. Cuba assumed the rotating presidency of the group in January. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez said that developing countries need support and assistance from more developed countries to confront the obstacles they face, including a decline in health and food services, and brain drain, which is a drain on these countries that are waiting for international support. Bermudez pointed out that there is a blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba and its economy, which has led to a humanitarian problem that has served as an obstacle to development, and affected the political will that aims to sti
mulate and activate innovation and creativity, and achieve justice. For his part, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres said that the efforts of all countries, with their representatives and leaders, continue to reach the goal set by the group to eradicate poverty and achieve solutions to all global problems. He added that the world today faces several crises, stressing that poverty and hunger are increasing in many countries, in addition to natural disasters and climate change, as well as global frameworks and systems that have not reached the goals they set, specifically developing countries. Guterres explained that the voice of the group is being heard, stressing that the world must work together for a multipolar world, and to embody a system that guarantees justice and equality, does not neglect anyone, and takes humanity into account. Guterres stressed that developing countries have suffered greatly under colonial rule for many years, and there must be measures in order for the global financial syste
m to be more representative of all these countries. The Group of 77+China Summit is the largest intergovernmental organization for developing countries in the United Nations. It was established on June 15, 1964 by 77 countries, and it has maintained its name even though it has expanded and currently includes 134 countries. The group aims to defend the collective economic interests of those countries and enhance their negotiating capacity on major international economic issues within the United Nations. Palestine assumed the presidency of the Group in 2019.
