Kevin Frey, CEO of the Generation Unlimited Initiative, said that the Green Rising Programme will support at least 10 million young people in climate action by 2025 after training them on eco-friendly skills.
In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of COP28, Frey lauded the initiatives launched at Expo City Dubai during the event, which focus on the sustainable future of young generations, pointing out that climate anxiety is the top concern of the youth today.
The world is suffering from a climate crisis, he said, noting that one in every three young people interviewed in a recent United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) survey conducted in the US said they are deeply concerned about climate change, rising temperatures, droughts, and floods.
He shared his optimism about the estimated 8 million job opportunities created by the green economy, stressing that Generation Unlimited has reached 92 million young people through its programmes in 80 countries.
He then called on countries
participating in COP28 to build on what was started by the UAE by supporting climate action and boosting the Loss and Damage Fund with US$100 million. He also explained that young people in developing countries need skill development to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
The initiative aims to unleash the potential of nearly 1.8 billion young people worldwide and build their capacities, Frey said in conclusion.
